Lynden Gooch has offered his verdict on Elliot Embleton’s controversially disallowed goal from Tuesday night.
The Sunderland player admitted his frustration at the referee’s decision to halt play in order to give the Black Cats a free kick despite Embleton being through on goal.
Patrick Roberts had been hauled down on the edge of the area, for which the referee had already given a free kick before the ball was put in the back of the net.
While Blackpool went on to have the better of the second half, it was Sunderland who felt they should’ve taken all three points from this 0-0 draw following that key moment in the game.
The 26-year old believes that his side did enough to win the game at the Stadium of Light and has lamented a missed opportunity to earn a victory in front of the home supporters.
“Obviously we’re frustrated and I think first half was probably some of our best football like at Reading I’d say,” said Gooch, via the Sunderland Echo.
“We are disappointed, we created chances to win the game and I think in that second half the referee knows he made a mistake.
“Obviously it’s really frustrating when the officials don’t get things right but I think we did enough in the game to win it.”

Win Draw Loss
The result is Sunderland’s second consecutive 0-0 draw, with Tony Mowbray’s team feeling the impact of the injuries to forwards Ellis Simms and Ross Stewart.
The draw leaves the club 7th in the Championship table ahead of tonight’s round of midweek games.
Up next for Sunderland is a trip to face Swansea City on 8 October.
The Verdict
For a 0-0 game, this was one that had good chances for both sides to take all three points.
Sunderland ultimately did well to hold on for a finish given some of the opportunities Blackpool created in the second half.
While Embleton’s goal being disallowed was a huge moment in the game, Sunderland still created enough in the first half to take a lead.
Perhaps a draw was a fair result between the two sides, but the hosts will be disappointed with their lack of goals in recent weeks.
