When Luton Town signed Carlos Mendes Gomes on the back of some stunning form at Morecambe, few thought it was a bad idea.

The winger had torn things up in League Two and Luton seemed like a natural step up for him – one that hopefully he would use to become an even better player at a club that has proven time and again it’s very good at getting the best out of young players arriving from lower down the leagues.

Indeed, Luton seemed to have done really well to get him. A host of clubs were linked with him as Morecambe were promoted historically thanks to his goals in no small part, and it seemed whoever got him was going to be signing really hot property with a huge amount of potential.

For CMG, though, his time at Luton has been tougher than most, with him unable to get into a rhythm in the side and unable to really find form, with system changes not helping him either.

Indeed, a loan move to Fleetwood Town this season seemed to suggest that the Hatters might be thinking about cutting their losses on him already, and that he might be better suited at playing in League One for a bit before another stab at the Championship.

At Fleetwood, though, he has shown some signs of revival of late and he scored in the FA Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday recently to secure Town’s passage to the fifth round.

He has five goals and two assists from 21 league appearances thus far for Fleetwood as per Whoscored, a pretty decent return by anyone’s standards, and he seems to be finding a level of confidence and form again that made him attractive to Luton in the first place.

Of course, whether it is enough for the Hatters to potentially rethink their position on him remains to be seen – he ripped up League Two and then struggled and so doing decently in League One is not now a guarantee of Championship, or even Premier League if they go up success, but it should be enough to make the Hatters think.

Rob Edwards will surely want a closer look at him now he is in charge of the club and so you do feel Mendes Gomes has at least earned a stay of execution to start with this coming summer.

What happens to him after that, though, remains to be seen.
