Luton Town step up interest in prolific Championship attacker

Blackburn Rovers are going to struggle to keep hold of their top scorer Sammie Szmodics this summer, as interest from Premier League relegation-threatened Luton Town mounts.

The recently-capped Republic of Ireland international has been in fine form this season, firing in 23 goals and leading the division's goalscoring charts. Despite his goals, however, Blackburn still remain in the race against relegation, lying just four points from safety.

With a drop in division still looming, and having had a stellar season for the Lancashire club, Szomodics may look to move on amid the rumoured interest, which has been .

As revealed by the football journalist, the Hatters are keen on making the move for Szmodics, regardless of the division they end up playing in next season.

They recently sent club scout David Moss to watch over the attacker, and he could add a different dynamic to Rob Edwards' attacking unit whether that is in the Premier League or the Championship.

With the Irishman topping the charts for goals this season, Blackburn will most likely demand a hefty fee in order to help replace their main man.

However, Luton shouldn't be too concerned with the finances of the deal as, if they are unlucky enough to experience Premier League relegation, parachute payments will see them flush with cash, and if they do stave off the drop, Premier League money will still be coursing through their veins, and they could look to strike an easy deal.

Sammie Szmodics' goal-scoring rise with Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn's number eight is currently experiencing a career-best goal return this season, currently sitting on the aforementioned 23 Championship goals, along with finding the back of the next six times in only three FA Cup games.

However, this season will be the first since 2020-21 where he has achieved double figures in the goal-scoring charts.

Szmodics signed for Rovers from Peterborough United in the summer of 2022, where, over the course of his three complete seasons with the Cambridgeshire club, he only netted 27 goals in 95 appearances, with 16 of the 27 being scored in League One.

Before that, he had what many would consider to be a disappointing spell at Championship stalwarts Bristol City, making only 4 appearances and not finding the net once.

Therefore, if Luton are to make a move for the twice-capped Irishman, they may be taking a small risk if he doesn't repeat his fine record in front of goal in 2024-25.

Brentford could be thorn in Luton's bonnet in Sammie Szmodics chase

Nixon's post on Patreon also mentioned Brentford, among other Premier League clubs, as holding an interest in Szmodics.

The West London side are perhaps in a worse position than Luton to make a move for the Blackburn star too.

They sit just four points clear of Luton, who sit in 18th, with both having played one game more than 17th-placed Nottingham Forest.

Bees fans, however, also recently received news that after over a decade owning the club, owner Matthew Bentham is putting the club up for sale.

As revealed by The Mirror last month, Benham is seeking £400 million for a completed sale, and this could dent Brentford's chances of signing the Championship star as, without a known owner, the transfer outlay is likely to be small this summer.

For Thomas Frank, he could be an extra added replacement for Ivan Toney, who looks set to depart, with the Londoners having already signed Igor Thiago from Club Brugge ahead of next season.

Meanwhile, for Edwards, Szmodics could be a more reliable option than Elijah Adebayo, who has spent a fair amount of time on the treatment table this season, to play alongside Carlton Morris next season.

Either way, Blackburn fans should perhaps be prepared to say their goodbyes later this month when they play their last home game of the season against Coventry City, and hopefully, it won't be twinned with the heartbreak of relegation to the third tier for the first time since 2017-18
