Luton Town have completed the signings of Josh Williams and Conor Lawless.

The pair are expected to join the club’s recently-formed U21s for the upcoming campaign, a system that Dion Pereira came through last season to now be involved in Luton’s first-team set up.

Williams, who spent time within the academies of Aston Villa and Crystal Palace, is also a Wales youth international, representing his nation from U15 to U19 level.

The 21-year-old operates as a left-back and had been training with Luton before the pandemic hit, but an injury halted his progression with the Bedfordshire club.

20-year-old Lawless is a product of Reading’s academy system, but he was released by The Royals in the summer.

Being another player that trialled with The Hatters last year, Lawless is a midfielder who made his first-team debut for The Royals last season in a FA Cup clash against Luton.

The verdict

Luton have put in a lot of effort to develop their U21s squad over the past 18 months, and Pereira is an example that there is a clear pathway to the first-team set up.

Luton’s existing U21s squad vastly consists of players who are 18 and 19, meaning that the addition of two players who are deemed more senior at this level, can only benefit the rest of the team.

The signing of an athletic full-back of Williams is a particularly intriguing acquisition, given the success, Nathan Jones has seen with the likes of Jack Stacey and James Justin.

Both players come with great academy experience and have every chance of progressing with The Hatters.
