Luton retain belief despite Man City mauling in ‘longest game of football’

Luton Town boss Robs Edwards says the backing of the supporters gives them belief they can avoid relegation from the Premier League, despite suffering a 5-1 defeat to Man City on Saturday.

The reigning champions were quick out of the gate at the Etihad Stadium, Erling Haaland’s volley going in off the head of Daiki Hashioka for an own goal a minute after kickoff.

Man City didn’t find the net again until the 64th minute when Mateo Kovacic scored a belting half-volley from just inside the area.

Haaland scored his 20th Premier League goal of the campaign from the spot before Ross Barkley got one back for the visitors with ten minutes remaining.

There was no comeback on the cards though, as Jeremy Doku found the target before Josko Gvardiol scored another screamer from the edge of the box to match the one he against Real Madrid in midweek.

“A long afternoon, the longest game of football I have ever had,” Edwards told BBC Match of the Day.

“We are really depleted at the moment, it was a difficult afternoon for us. The players gave everything and we didn’t get off to the best of starts.

“A great save for Thomas and then a deflected volley off Daiki Hashioka’s head. They wore us down in the end but I cannot fault the players – it is done.

“We now have five huge games that we can get ourselves out of it, we almost have to write this off.

“They scored three worldies, there was lots of shots and Thomas had to make some saves.

“We kept going and they got the last couple later on when they wore us down. The players never dropped their heads and we won’t accept that. What gives me belief is our fans right with us till the end and we are going to need them.”

Luton remain in the bottom three of the Premier League table, one point behind Nottingham Forest following their draw with Wolves at the City Ground.
