Manchester United defender Luke Shaw is reportedly considering calling it quits at the club and sealing a move to a surprise transfer destination.

Shaw’s injury troubles

Shaw has endured a difficult time since joining United from Southampton in 2015.

He has struggled with injuries and fitness issues, which have led to him missing almost five years of his career. This started with a terrible leg break soon after his arrival at Old Trafford – a setback that nearly led to amputation.

The England international made just seven Premier League appearances last season. He turned out 12 times for the club in the campaign before that.

But, Shaw remains a valued member of the squad. Erik ten Hag appreciated his qualities and it appears Ruben Amorim is also an admirer of his.

In addition to playing at left-back, Shaw can be deployed to great effect on the left side of a three-man or even two-man defence system. Amorim has primarily used him in central defence.

So far this window, there has been very little to suggest that United are looking to offload Shaw. He has been included in the team’s pre-season squad for the United States tour and is expected to get minutes in the Premier League summer series clashes against West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton.

Now, The Sun claim that Shaw is contemplating a United exit amidst worries over his long-term role at the club.

Shaw open to United departure

According to The Sun, “England left-back Shaw, 30, is aware of serious interest from Saudi clubs and is ready to listen to offers.”

“He still has two years left on his Old Trafford contract but fears his Red Devils career might be nearing an end.”

The newspaper notes that Shaw is likely to be behind Patrick Dorgu and new arrival Diego Leon in the pecking order. Shaw therefore knows that “he is liable to be making up the numbers” once the 2025/26 season gets underway.

It’s understood that Amorim is not currently eager to offload Shaw but the player’s desire to get his career back on track may ultimately ensure that a deal to leave gets over the line.

United will not make it hard for Shaw to go away and are unlikely to ask for a big sum.
