Luke Shaw has opened up on his relationship with former manager Jose Mourinho. The left-back was one the receiving end of numerous public rants from the Portuguese but has now revealed what it what actually like.

Shaw’s first game under Mourinho was also his first after suffering a double leg-break in the previous season, the start of three difficult seasons under the decorated coach.

Mourinho was reluctant to play Shaw, often picking Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind, and Ashley Young ahead of the 25-year-old, despite none of them being natural left-backs.

“It was sort of a mixed relationship,” Shaw told SPORTbible. “Sometimes he went about it the right way, and I think a lot of people would agree with that.

“People know our relationship wasn’t the best. I think it was quite easy to see that from the outside, but I think one thing that Jose did do was make me mentally much stronger. But I would probably use ‘mental strength’ to describe the period under Jose Mourinho.”

The left-back has enjoyed a resurgence in form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season, earning himself a place in the Premier League team of the year along the way.

The signing of Alex Telles last year seemed to be one to replace Shaw in the team but the former Southampton defender took the challenge in his stride and instead took his game to another level.
