Roma striker Romelu Lukaku continued his sensational form while on national team duty with Belgium, scoring four first-half goals and leading his team to a commanding 5-0 victory over 10-man Azerbaijan.
Playing in windy Brussels, the 30 year-old scored all four goals within the span of twenty minutes and increased his goal tally to 14 for the European championship qualification stage. As a result, he surpassed the previous record of 13 goals held by Robert Lewandowski of Poland and David Healy of Northern Ireland.
“It was an outstanding performance by Romelu,” stated Belgium manager Domenico Tedesco in his post-match press conference. “He scored with every shot. You can’t do better.”
Lukaku echoed his coach’s statements and applauded his teammates despite his headline-grabbing performance.
“The entire team gave a great performance today and we did well to display our qualities,” said the striker.
“Obviously scoring four goals feel very good. I’ve been playing a lot with Roma in recent weeks so the manager and I both agreed I’d come off at halftime. We have to stay on this path and continue just like this.”
