The 33-year-old was the favourite going into Monday’s ceremony in London, ahead of former team mate Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah.
And so it’s proved.
The Blancos maestro claimed the award at a star-studded ceremony this evening after what’s been a superb year for the ex-Tottenham man.
He was instrumental in Real Madrid’s Champions League victory in May, putting in a stunning performance in the final against Liverpool – guiding Zinedine Zidane’s side to their third straight European title.
But it didn’t end there for the playmaker as he helped his country to their first ever World Cup final – beating the likes of Argentina, Denmark, Russia and England along the way.
Modrić was named the World Cup’s best player after the final in Moscow, and the game’s governing body have honoured him once again by naming him their best player of 2018.
The award was voted for by fans, selected journalists, national team coaches and captains.
