Midfielder Luka Modrić has admitted that he expects next season to be his final one for Real Madrid, due to his advancing age.
His current contract at the Santiago Bernabéu is set to expire in June 2021, by which point he would be 35.
And speaking to a media outlet in his homeland, the Croatian confessed that he isn’t likely to pen an extension – even if it something he’d be eager to do.
“Real is my home but Real also decide what is best for the club,” Modrić told Sportske novosti.
“I know that midfielders and forward rarely stay here until the age of 35. I succeeded [in doing that].
“It wasn’t handed to me. I deserved it with my work and attitude. If the club believe I should no longer be here, I’m ready for that.
“Nothing could change my feelings towards this club. I hope to break the stereotype but Real can’t wait for the end of your career to arrive.
“I tried very hard to get here. I went through so much so I won’t give this up lightly. I’ll fight on the field to show that I deserve to stay.
“The only thing I can say for certain is that I’ll be here until at least the summer of 2021.”
Despite his veteran status, Modrić still made 39 appearances for the club in all competitions last season.
