Gianluigi Donnarumma (25) has never lacked the public support of Luis Enrique since the Spaniard became the Paris Saint-Germain manager.

Even when his goalkeeper was sent off earlier in the season for a reckless kung-fu kick on Le Havre AC’s Josué Casimir (22), his manager came to his aid and claimed that the goalkeeper was only following his instructions.

There had been suggestions at the time about Donnarumma’s suitability for the project building under Luis Enrique, and these have doubts have never truly regressed, as rumours linger that the club are assessing their options in the transfer market in the summer.

Donnarumma ‘He’s a world-class goalkeeper’

Despite these doubts, Luis Enrique remains fully behind his goalkeeper as he spoke ahead of the Sunday match against Stade de Reims, and his faith has been rewarded. Donnarumma has put in numerous impressive performances this season, even becoming one of the best-performing keepers in Europe.

The manager reminded everyone that Donnarumma had been vital in their previous match against Will Still’s side, “The game was wide-open and [the scoreline, a 3-0 victory for PSG] did not reflect the nature of the match because ‘Gigio’ [Donnarumma] was fantastic.”

Luis Enrique continued his praise for his goalkeeper, “The most important thing for a player is to have confidence. He always had mine, he’s a world-class goalkeeper… We want him to be a leader. He’s a player who sees everything on the pitch, so he can help us with the position of his teammates and his opponents.”
