Luis Enrique admitted that he does not believe there is a clear gulf in quality between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, ahead of the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final clash on Wednesday.
The 54-year-old’s PSG side claimed a slender 0-1 win in North London last week thanks to Ousmane Dembélé’s early goal, but in a press conference on Tuesday, Enrique explained: “To be honest, I don’t think that any one line of the team is superior to the others. Regardless of the players, that’s one of Paris Saint-Germain’s great strengths this season.”
“You have to follow very clear principles,” he told the gathered media at the club’s training ground, having explained that PSG will not shy away from their usual attacking style of play and will instead “stay true to the ideas we’ve had so far.”
Enrique’s refusal to change is symbolic of the trust he has in his squad and the broader philosophy that has shaped his approach since he took charge at the Parc des Princes in July 2023. Achraf Hakimi spoke openly about the Spaniard’s impact at the club, insisting that he’s been given a new “freedom” on the pitch and has been able to “become a more complete player.”
“Throughout my career,” Enrique explained, “I’ve always said that I have an excellent level of players. At every club, I try to bring individual and collective skills. Since last season, the team has received a lot of praise.”
“That was one of my objectives: to offer the fans an attractive way of playing, like going to the cinema or a show. It’s very positive that people are talking about us,” he told reporters.
PSG will look to defend their one-goal advantage from last week’s first leg when they meet Arsenal again at the Parc des Princes, with kick-off in the French capital scheduled for 20:00 BST [21:00 CEST] on Wednesday 7 May.
