Speaking after Spain’s 1-1 draw against Germany at the FIFA World Cup 2022, La Roja manager Luis Enrique hailed the quality of Barcelona veterans Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, claiming that the duo are still performing at an amazing level.

The 52-year-old went on to add that there was a campaign against the ageing Barça duo to push them out but they remain top-quality players.

Spain were unable to build on their 7-0 win against Costa Rica in the opening game as they played out a 1-1 draw with Germany in one of the most hotly-anticipated matches of the World Cup.

And, Barcelona’s Alba and Busquets were impressive on the night. The former grabbed yet another assist, setting Alvaro Morata up for Spain’s only goal of the game while Busquets was solid as usual in the middle of the park.

Both Alba and Busquets continue to be key parts of the Spanish national team but have copped a lot of criticism while playing for Barcelona in recent times. And Enrique believes that there is a campaign against the veteran stars from some sections of supporters.

“Alba is a player at the highest level like Busquets, there is a campaign against them and that’s normal because people are tired of veterans. I bring them to the national team because they are amazing players. Alba is the best full-back in the world in the final third of the field,” he said (h/t SPORT).

Enrique then further went on to reiterate his desire to convince Busquets to play another World Cup, as he added:

“Alba is like Busquets, they’ve been trying to force him out for many years. I hope we can convince him to continue and play another World Cup.”

While Enrique wants to prolong Busquets’ international career, his time at Barcelona is likely to come to an end in the summer when his contract expires, with a move to Inter Miami FC being touted heavily.

As for Alba, the 33-year-old remains keen on seeing out his contract that runs until 2024. But Barça intend to terminate his contract next year itself and plan to begin discussions on that starting January.
