French clubs are riding high in the UEFA Champions League – most of them at least. AS Monaco are currently in third, joint with fourth-placed Stade Brestois on 10 points, whilst Lille OSC, having beaten Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, and drawn against Juventus, are in 14th on seven points. All look on course to qualify for the play-off round, at least.
The top eight teams in the new ‘League Phase’ will automatically qualify for the Round of 16, whilst the teams ranked ninth to 24th will play a knockout play-off. Currently, Paris Saint-Germain, last season’s Champions League semi-finalists, are on course for elimination from the competition.
With just one win in their first four games and following Wendesday night’s 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid, PSG are currently 25th. With four games remaining, Luis Enrique has admitted that Les Parisiens’ qualification is at risk. “Is our qualification in danger? Without a doubt. We have four games left and we will give our all with unwavering faith,” said the PSG manager.
The matches remaining aren’t easy. PSG will face Bayern Munich, RB Salzburg, Manchester City, and VfB Stuttgart as they look to haul themselves up the table. The top eight, however, now looks beyond them entirely.
