Barcelona and England right-back Lucy Bronze has undergone keyhole surgery on her knee with the World Cup fast approaching.
The defender was substituted during Barcelona’s 1-0 win at Chelsea in the Champions League semi-finals last week but is now ruled out of Thursday’s return fixture.
Bronze has now undergone surgery, Barcelona have confirmed on Wednesday, with head coach Jonatan Giráldez saying “it’s a tiny intervention, just a couple of weeks.”
That news would be a huge relief for Sarina Wiegman and England, as long as Bronze does recover as expected.
The Lionesses are already set to travel to this summer’s World Cup without captain Leah Williamson and forward Beth Mead, Player of the Tournament at last summer’s Euros.
Williamson suffered a ruptured ACL last week and is definitely out of contention. Mead has not been officially ruled out but is still recovering from the same injury, suffered back in November.
Chelsea centre-back Millie Bright is also currently sidelined with a knee issue and may not feature again this season.
England kick off their World Cup campaign in under three months, facing Haiti on 22 July.
