Jadon Sancho became the first teenager to score 25 goals in the Bundesliga in BVB’s 5-0 win over FC Union Berlin on Saturday. His coach allowed himself a rare moment of awe after the game.

Sancho is shattering record after record in the Bundesliga. The Englishman, who turns 20 in March, grabbed another goal and assist against Union Berlin. The Englishman is the only player in Europe’s top 5 leagues to have 12 goals and 12 assists to his name.

“What can I say about Jadon Sancho? He’s 20 [sic]. He has already achieved a lot. Phew. Fantastic. But he needs to continue to work hard in training. He’s only a professional for one and a half seasons,” Dortmund coach Lucien Favre told his news conference after the game.

The 62-year-old was very satisfied with the three points and how they were won. He said: “We desperately wanted to win this game. Our ball-winning was great, often very high up the field. Our two goals before halftime were very well-crafted and in the second half, we were searching for a third. With the penalty, the game was decided. We’re very happy with the 5-0 win.”

The Black and Yellows have scored 5 goals apiece in their three Bundesliga games in 2020 with firestarter Erling Haaland providing almost half of the 15. The 19-year-old set another league record by scoring seven goals in his first three games, pipping Gert Dörfel (1963) and a certain Paco Alcácer (2018), who scored six in their first three games.

Union coach Urs Fischer, however, thought that the result captured his team’s performance a bit too harshly.

“A fully deserved win for Dortmund. Maybe the score was too high by one or two goals in the end. We weren’t five goals worse,” the Swiss coach said, adding: “The 2-0 deficit in the first half was unnecessary. We did not defend resolute enough. Dortmund were fully in the game and provoked our errors. After the break, we had the best phase but then we conceded the 3-0 out of the blue — and then you see the sheer quality of BVB, their pace and their technical ability. In the end, we didn’t do enough when we were 3-0 down. You need to clamp down because the goal difference can become a factor at the end of the season.”

BVB will face Werder Bremen in the DFB Pokal on Tuesday before meeting sixth-place Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
