Speaking in a pre-match press conference ahead of Nice’s match against PSG this weekend, manager Lucien Favre has admitted that it is difficult to manage the goalkeeping situation.

Marcin Bulka (22) made his loan move from PSG to Nice permanent this summer. Speaking to L’Équipe, the player’s agent, Yvan Le Mée, said that the deal was completed on the assumption that he would be the number 1 for Les Aiglons this summer, following the departure of Walter Benítez (29) to PSV.

However, towards the end of the transfer window, Nice brought in Kasper Schmeichel (35) from Leicester City, jeopardising Bulka’s role in the team. Bulka played in Nice’s Europa Conference League opener against Köln, as well as the club’s last league match against Angers. Prior to that match, he hadn’t featured in a Ligue 1 fixture since the opening gameweek of the season.

According to RMC Sport, before the opening match of the season, Schmeichel’s team called owner Jim Ratcliffe to ensure that the Dane would start the opening game of the season against Toulouse. Favre ignored the demand and instead started Bulka.

Favre has now said, “For sure, it isn’t easy to manage the situation. But in the end, you have to decide and we are lucky to have two very good goalkeepers. It is normal that when a player doesn’t play, he isn’t happy.”
