There has been great clamour to see Lucas Chevalier (23) called up to the France squad. He could be about to get his chance later this month, Le Parisien understands.
Thus far, Didier Deschamps has shown great faith in his goalkeepers. Mike Maignan has been the undisputed No.1 since Hugo Lloris’ international retirement. Behind him, RC Lens’ Brice Samba has been locked in at No.2, and West Ham United’s Alphonse Areola as No.3.
However, the latter has endured a difficult start to the campaign, which has seen him replaced between the sticks by Lukasz Fabianski. That demotion could cost Areola his place in the upcoming France squad, as Le Parisien report. Chevalier, who has shone for Lille OSC this season, particularly in the UEFA Champions League, could be the benefactor of Areola’s drop off.
It would be a first call-up for Chevalier. Deschamps announces his squad for the UEFA Nations League matches against Israel and Italy on Thursday.
