Former Juventus striker Luca Toni was highly critical of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Coppa Italia final showing as he failed to deliver a performance that was considered good enough.
Ronaldo was only able to unleash a single shot on target and didn’t get his chance during the penalty shootout as Paulo Dybala and Danilo missed Juve’s first two attempts from the spot.
“I saw the whole Juventus team in difficulty, even Cristiano Ronaldo, who looked like an average player in what was a very slow match,” the 43-year-old Toni told Rai Sport after the match.
“You expect a big performance from him but he looked like he was experiencing physical difficulties – he couldn’t even dribble a man.
“Buffon was the best player on the pitch. I liked Douglas Costa a lot too, but Sarri only let him play 60 minutes.
“[Douglas] Costa and [Juan] Cuadrado were the only ones able to beat their man because at the moment Ronaldo is struggling to dribble.”
The defeat marked the first time in Ronaldo’s illustrious career that he’s lost two finals in a row (Supercoppa Italiana).
