Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal has urged Tottenham’s Steven Bergwijn to join Ajax this summer.

The forward is one of a number of players said to be surplus to Antonio Conte’s requirements in North London, and has himself expressed a desire to leave the club.

Bergwijn was only selected to make four starts in the Premier League last season, yet is an important player for his country, scoring in Friday’s 4-1 win over Belgium.

“If it’s up to me, Steven Bergwijn may join Ajax as soon as possible,” the former Manchester United boss told De Telegraaf, ahead of a key period before November’s World Cup in Qatar.

Bergwijn was targeted by Ajax last January, however Conte was reluctant to let the player leave mid-season.
