Lorient were looking to build on draws in their opening two outings of the season in difficult fixtures against Paris Saint-Germain and OGC Nice. Meanwhile, this was an awkward assignment for Lille, falling in between the two legs of their UEFA Europa Conference League play-off tie against Croatian side Rijeka.

The hosts went ahead in the ninth minute when captain Laurent Abergel pounced on a reckless pass out by Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier and finished to make it 1-0. They then doubled their lead just two minutes later as Siriné Doucouré set up Julien Ponceau to beat Chevalier with a superb strike into the roof of the net (11’).

Lille were all at sea but they managed to get to half-time without conceding again and then reduced the deficit 10 minutes into the second half as Angel Gomes set up Canada star Jonathan David to score.

Nevertheless, Romain Faivre made it 3-1 with a sumptuous chip over Chevalier following a long ball downfield (62’), and Vincent Le Goff found the net from a tight angle for Lorient's fourth midway through the second half.

It is the first time Lorient have scored four goals in a Ligue 1 Uber Eats game since they beat AS Saint-Etienne 6-2 in April 2022, while this was Lille’s heaviest loss since going down 7-1 at home to Paris Saint-Germain on August 21 last year.

THE PLAYER: Lucas Chevalier

The young goalkeeper is tipped as a future France international but he endured a torrid evening at the Stade du Moustoir, his error for the first goal setting the tone for a day he will not want to remember.

THE STAT: 18

None of the last 18 top-flight meetings between these teams have ended in a draw.

Elsewhere Teddy Teuma was in inspired form as Stade de Reims won 3-1 away to a Montpellier Hérault SC side who had triumphed 4-1 at Olympique Lyonnais in their previous outing.

Yunis Abdelhamid headed in from Teuma’s corner to give Reims an early lead, and the latter then made it 2-0 with a fine strike from a free-kick late in the first half.

Téji Savanier saw a free-kick hit the bar for Montpellier, who pulled a goal back in first-half stoppage time thanks to a third in two matches for their new Jordanian signing, Mousa al-Tamari. Arnaud Nordin then hit the post for the hosts early in the second half, before French-born Maltese international Teuma made it 3-1 with a stunning strike on the half-volley. Reims could have scored again, but Oumar Diakité had a penalty saved.

RC Strasbourg Alsace bounced back from last week’s loss in Monaco to make it two wins from as many home games this season as they beat Toulouse FC 2-0 at the Stade de la Meinau. Both goals came in the second half, with Jean-Ricner Bellegarde crossing for Emanuel Emegha to head in his first in Ligue 1. Bellegarde then wrapped up the win late on.

Georges Mikautadze scored the only goal of the game as FC Metz claimed their first win since returning to the top flight with a 1-0 success at Clermont Foot 63, who have now lost three out of three.
