Lorient captain Laurent Abergel (31) is poised to sign a new long-term contract with Les Merlus, keeping him at the Brittany club until 2030, according to a report this Saturday from Ouest-France. The reliable midfielder was the subject of interest from Nantes and Auxerre recently, on the back of Lorient’s relegation into Ligue 2. Les Merlus were one goal short of pulling off one of the all-time great relegation escapes. Instead, Abergel has decided he will stick with his team – a remarkable show of faith.

When his contract expires in 2030, Abergel will be 37. The outlet report that the former Olympique de Marseille midfielder is expected to remain at Lorient when his playing career comes to an end. Ouest-France adds that a contract renewal was the only solution to prevent Abergel from going for pastures new, considering he would have entered his final contract year. The outlet understands that a French Champions League-playing side, likely to be Brest, were also planning a summer move for Abergel.
