Lorenz Assignon keen on Burnley departure

Lorenz Assignon’s (23) future at Burnley FC is in suspense. The full-back arrived at the club on loan from Stade Rennais in January in a loan deal with an option to buy, however, in the wake of Burnley’s relegation to the EFL Championship, it is looking increasingly unlikely that Assignon will remain with the Clarets, according to a report from L’Équipe.

Assignon started the season at Rennes as the first-choice right-back, following the departure of club captain Hamari Traoré last summer. However, Julien Stéphan’s arrival at the club, coupled with the signing of Alidu Seidu meant that Assignon’s opportunities would be limited.

Assignon looking elsewhere

As a result, the Frenchman was loaned out to Burnley in a deal that included a €10m purchase option. The club revealed on Tuesday that there would be discussions regarding the permanent signing of Assignon. Since joining, the full-back has missed just one game, making 15 appearances, registering two assists and scoring once. Burnley may want to keep him and they have until the 31st May to trigger the purchase option, however, the decision is not theirs to make.

L’Équipe understands that the decision lies with Assignon himself and as things stand, he is more interested in looking at opportunities elsewhere.
