The Bosnian goalkeeper signed for the Championship side last summer on a one-year deal that is now set to expire this month.

Begovic featured regularly for the west London outfit, playing in 45 of their 46 league games in the second tier last season.

However, speculation over his future has persisted in recent weeks, linking him with a move to Celtic, as well as more recently the Hammers, Magpies and unnamed Saudi Arabian sides.

Celtic are searching for a new shot-stopper following the retirement of first-choice Joe Hart, whilst the likes of West Ham and Newcastle will see Begovic as a home-grown backup option.

Asmir Begovic opens up on QPR future

Begovic has admitted that he is looking at all of his options as talks continue with QPR over committing his future to the club.

The 36-year-old revealed that he enjoyed his year at Loftus Road, and would like to see what the team can achieve if they stick together for another campaign.

“I am currently looking at options, talking to obviously QPR and see what happens there, see what happens in the next few weeks, it is still pretty early in the transfer window," said Begovic, via talkSPORT.

"Nothing has been decided yet. I am keeping myself fit.

“I really enjoyed last year, the fact that I played so many games.

“In the second half of the season, for us, the team became together really well.

“Let’s see if we can keep this group of players together, have another run at it next year, see what else is out there and take it from there.”

Begovic previously had stints with Everton, Bournemouth and Chelsea in recent years, as well as stints on loan at AC Milan and Qarabag.

The move to QPR solidified himself back as a first-choice goalkeeper, having been second in line during his time at Goodison Park.

He kept 13 clean sheets from 45 Championship appearances, conceding 57 times as the team narrowly avoided relegation to League One.

QPR’s upwards trajectory under Marti Cifuentes

QPR had a difficult start to the previous campaign under Gareth Ainsworth, but Martí Cifuentes played a big role in turning things around in the second half of the term.

The Spaniard replaced Ainsworth as manager in October, with the team sitting in the relegation zone.

The Hoops went on to finish 18th in the table, with three wins in a row in their final three fixtures ending their season on a high note.

The club will now be hoping for a positive transfer window this summer in order to build a team capable of competing in the top half of the second division next year.

Asmir Begovic staying would be a good start to the summer for QPR

Tying down Begovic to another contract would be a great start to QPR’s summer business.

The Hoops will want to focus their transfer priorities elsewhere, so making sure they keep their first-choice goalkeeper could allow them to invest in improving other areas of the squad - irrespective of his age.

If Begovic did leave then QPR would have to spend time searching for an adequate replacement, which would be more costly than keeping him around for another year.

His experience is also great to have in the dressing room, especially as Cifuentes looks to build upon last year’s positive end to the campaign, and whilst a departure wouldn't exactly be the end of the world, the Spanish head coach would surely be looking for continuity rather than change.
