Derby County midfielder Jason Knight has claimed he has “always been happy” at Pride Park but refused to confirm he wants to stay at the League One club.

The 21-year-old is a product of the Rams academy and has become a central figure in the squad but his current contract is set to expire this summer.

Paul Warne revealed earlier this month that Derby are able to trigger a one-year extension in Knight’s deal and indicated that they’re “obviously” likely to take it.

The midfielder has been linked with a move to clubs higher up the English pyramid in the past and speculation will only continue to grow unless he agrees new terms.

Speaking to BBC Radio Derby, Knight fielded questions about his contract situation.

He said: “I’ve always been happy here. I’ve come through here and I know a lot of people around the club, a lot of people around the city so I’ve always been happy here.

“But contract stuff takes care of itself.”

Asked directly whether he wanted to stay at the East Midlands club, he said: “Look we’ll see what happens I suppose but I’m really enjoying my football.”

Knight has featured 28 times in all competitions this season, taking his appearance tally for the Rams to nearly 150.

When fit, he’s been a regular fixture in Warne’s side as they’ve battled for a top six place in League One.

The Verdict

It’s a clear positive that Knight is happy at Derby but it is also telling that he’s refused to be drawn into saying that he wants to stay at the club.

The 21-year-old has been linked with top Championship clubs and the Premier League in previous windows so you’d understand if he wants to assess his options in the summer.

You’d imagine the Rams are likely to have a much better chance of keeping hold of him if they’re promoted from League One this season.

If they miss out, then given his contract situation they’ll surely have to consider bids for him.
