Matteo Gabbia should be given a new contract shortly, according to recent reports. However, there has been a suggestion that AC Milan will delay the deal until next year.

Since the start of the year, there has not been a more consistent performer for Milan than Gabbia. When he returned from Villarreal, he took his opportunity when given, and quickly became a mainstay. However, things looked bleak when the Rossoneri added another defender in the summer mercato.

Now, though, his position in the defence could not be stronger, and he is the first-choice for Paulo Fonseca after some vital performances, including a huge goal in the derby. It is not just the Diavolo who are noticing the 24-year-old, and when he was given his first senior Italian National Team call-up it was not a surprise.

With his performances, and importance growing, Milan have been keen to discuss a new contract with the defender, and things are going positively, according to reports. At present, it is believed the parties are working on a five-year deal.

However, Daniele Longo has reported that the contract may not be finalised until January 2025, and this would be done strategically, with the intention of changing the expiry date to June 2030.
