Transfer News: Crystal Palace and Valencia vie to take Manchester United star Donny van de Beek on loan

According to The Guardian, Crystal Palace and Valencia have approached Manchester United about taking out-of-favour midfielder Donny van de Beek on loan for the remainder of the season.

The Dutchman joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2020 and got off to a fine start at Old Trafford by scoring on his debut. However, it proved to be the zenith of his time at the Theatre of Dreams as he has since struggled to establish himself in the starting XI.

A criminally underused player under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick’s arrival has done little to aid the Dutchman’s cause. With just days to go before the winter transfer window shuts, he now has an opportunity to garner regular playtime elsewhere.

The Man United boss, for his part, is not in favour of the midfielder moving to Selhurst Park. Patrick Vieira’s side is refusing to admit defeat and continue to pursue the 24-year-old. Whether they will have the last laugh is anyone’s guess.

Van de Beek could yet have a future at Old Trafford. Man United are unlikely to include an option to buy should the player be allowed to go out on loan. The Dutchman is seeking regular game time and the prospects of him gaining that at Old Trafford is unlikely, which could become a problem with the FIFA World Cup in Qatar edging closer by the day.

van de Beek to leave Man United?

Whether Rangnick is only averse to letting the player move to Palace remains unknown. Valencia are in the tenth spot in La Liga and could do with the infusion of quality that van de Beek can add to their squad. The ex-Ajax ace could also benefit from a change of scenery and increased playing time under Jose Bordalas.

Man United have already parted ways with Anthony Martial, who will join Sevilla on a loan. Curiously, he too appears to have no obligation to buy included in the contract. This approach, however, could prove pivotal for the Red Devils in the long run.

Both Martial and van de Beek have looked out of form and out of sorts at Old Trafford. Having them gain playing time elsewhere could be just what the doctor ordered and can help them retain their best form. If anything, a loan spell can act as an audition of sorts before a decision can be made on their futures in the summer.

Van de Beek was one of the finest young players while at Ajax Amsterdam. His move to Man United, however, has not gone according to plan and he looks shorn of belief in his own abilities. He will hopefully be allowed to go on loan and return to Old Trafford in the summer as a changed player.

Jesse Lingard benefited from some time away at West Ham United last season, but that has resulted in no real increase in his play-time at Man United this season. It remains to be seen if a similar fate awaits van de Beek, or if he can still turn around his career in Manchester.
