Manchester United could take a financial hit thanks to Andreas Pereira horrorshow

According to The Sun, Manchester United could face a major headache in the form of loanee Andreas Pereira as his mistake in the final of Copa Libertadores for Flamengo has put a question mark over the valuation of the transfer fee at the end of this year.

Pereira got sent on a season-long loan to the Brazilian side with an option to buy at the end of the season. Expectations were for the buy option to be triggered and Man United to earn £17million for his permanent transfer. With his contract with the Red Devils expiring in 2023, it would have been a perfect opportunity to get him off the wage bill.

The 25-year-old had started well this season and quickly became a regular for the Brazilian giants. He has played 23 matches this season and has five goals and an assist to his name. He played as a deep-lying midfielder for his loan club and was in a similar role in the final when he made the blunder.

Having made the crucial mistake that gave Palmeiras the trophy in extra time, he did not cover himself in glory, much to his disappointment. Following the incident, the South American club want to drive down the transfer fee and are using the incident as a negotiation tactic.

Mengao are not sold on him and could still decide not to activate the permanent transfer at the end of the loan deal. With no guarantee for the midfielder to continue next season, he may have to rejoin the Red Devils, which is far from ideal for all parties.

What to make of it?

The initial fee would have been a decent sum for us as it could have helped in backing Ralf Rangnick to get his desired transfer targets. However, we may have to take a loss and bring down the asking price rather than risk losing him on a free.

Since the Brazilian did impress in his time there, we still have enough ammo to negotiate for a decent amount. Whether Flamengo will bite remains to be seen.
