Liverpool’s rivals Manchester City are reportedly expecting the Reds to splash out on a ‘top-class forward’ in the summer transfer window.
According to Football Insider, Manchester City believe that Liverpool will react strongly to their trophyless season by dipping into the market.
The report claims City expect Liverpool to sign an attacker who has ‘world-class’ potential among five new signings this summer.
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
Liverpool, who are 22 points behind Manchester City with 21 left to play for, are unable to win a major trophy this season. They have already been knocked out of the FA Cup, League Cup and the Champions League as well, which means the Reds will have a barren year – having won the Premier League title at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.
Some recent reports seem to back up City’s fear that Liverpool will pursue a new attacker to bolster their squad this summer. Liverpool are reportedly keen on Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri, who has scored 22 goals in all competitions for the Spanish side this season. En-Nesyri has scored 16 goals in La Liga this term, which is – interestingly – more than any Manchester City player has managed in the Premier League, Ilkay Gundogan leading the way on 12.
Whether that makes En-Nesyri a top-class forward is hard to say, as it is entirely subjective, but his scoring numbers are impressive and stack up well against City’s list of attackers. The Sevilla forward could be the player City are expecting Liverpool to sign, or at least the profile of player in terms of his pedigree and record this season.
