Wataru Endo featured for Liverpool in his native Japan and described it as an ‘amazing moment’ to represent his club in his home country.
The Reds defeated Yokohama F. Marinos 3-1 in Tokyo, in the final match of their pre-season tour in Asia. Endo started on the bench but came on for the final half hour of the match.
Endo reflected on being able to play for Liverpool with his family in the crowd watching on.
”It was an amazing moment for me, coming back to Japan as a Liverpool player. For me, it means a lot. It was an amazing moment for me.
“All my family came to watch the game today. I’m happy that I could show this game for my family.”
The 32-year-old replaced Virgil van Dijk in the 59th minute and wore the captain’s armband during his cameo. He said: “It was a great gesture. I really appreciate it.”
“It’s not easy for us to beat Yokohama,” Endo continued, “We need to show that we are Liverpool and champions of the Premier League.
“I give 100% whether I play centre-back, number six or right-back. I played centre-back when I played in Japan, I don’t mind where I play, I always give 100%.”
The game also saw Florian Wirtz’s first goal in his new colours after his £116 million transfer from Bayer Leverkusen. Endo insisted: “The new signings were already welcomed by everybody. I think they enjoy playing with us.”
Liverpool’s other goals in the match came from youngster Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha. The duo have both impressed during the Reds’ pre-season matches. Endo admitted: “Our young players showed a lot of potential on the pitch. We are preparing well for the new season.
“Trey is very fit. Against Milan as well, he showed himself. It’s always good for the team to have these kind of young players because they have great potential. I hope he can keep playing well.”
