Liverpool aren’t just dipping their toes into this summer transfer market. Under Arne Slot, they are moving with authority and intent. The club’s pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz and AFC Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez, on the back of the already secured Jeremie Frimpong, signals the beginning of something very serious at Anfield.
The transfer talk surrounding these players isn’t just wishful thinking. These deals look well advanced, and there is growing confidence among those close to the club that they will be concluded in the next fortnight. Liverpool are acting with a clarity and decisiveness that is increasingly rare in a chaotic transfer landscape.
What excites me, though, isn’t just who we’re signing but the message behind the signings. These aren’t stop-gap players or depth signings. Wirtz, Kerkez and Frimpong have the quality to walk straight into the first team and push Liverpool even further clear of the chasing pack in the Premier League.

Let’s start with Wirtz, a generational talent by anyone’s standards. Some questioned whether he was Bayern-bound or destined for Manchester City, but Liverpool have quietly, and now emphatically, emerged as the front-runners. This is a statement signing if we’ve ever seen one. Wirtz is the kind of player you build a team around, not fit into a system.
A number 10 by nature, he’s posted 41 Bundesliga goals and assists over two seasons while averaging over 80 touches per 90 minutes – unheard of for a player in his role. In fact, the only players hitting those numbers for touches are mostly centre-backs and deep-lying midfielders. He’s doing it in the final third.

And yet, it’s not just the numbers. It’s the intelligence, the dribbling, the defensive work, and the way he manipulates space. Wirtz is a technician who also runs and presses, a rare blend Liverpool have lacked for years, even in the Jurgen Klopp era.
There’s always noise around where a player might best fit in, especially when you’ve got a packed squad. But to me, Wirtz has to be played where he’s most effective – centrally, behind the striker. You don’t spend over £100 million on a player like this and then shift him to the left wing or bury him deeper. Play him where he can dominate games.
Then there’s Milos Kerkez. A player whose rise in European football has been nothing short of meteoric. The Hungarian international, still just 21, brings bite and balance to the left-hand side – an area that has increasingly become a question mark for Liverpool.
Kerkez is aggressive, direct, and possesses the kind of mentality you want in a team looking to win titles. In fact, he reminds me a lot of the Andy Robertson we saw in Klopp’s dominant sides.

He’s not here to be a squad player – and that is what excites me. If this deal goes through, he could very quickly become Liverpool’s first-choice left-back. With Andy Robertson not getting any younger, and Kostas Tsimikas likely to leave the club this summer, it makes perfect sense.
And let’s not forget Jeremie Frimpong. That deal is already done, and it’s a belter. An attacking right-back in the mould of peak-Trent, Frimpong is electric and fearless. He gives Liverpool a different dimension on the right – a wing-back option who can play in a variety of systems. Slot’s flexibility with formations makes this even more useful.
Between Frimpong and Kerkez, Liverpool will be able to stretch teams horizontally while Wirtz threads passes through the middle. It’s a new-look Liverpool, and it’s a frightening one.
If those three signings are wrapped up quickly, as I believe they will be, Liverpool will already have had one of the most efficient and high-impact starts to a transfer window in years. But we’re not done. Not even close.
A forward still needs to come in. This is a priority, particularly with doubts around Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota’s Anfield futures. Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid and Joao Pedro of Brighton are two names to watch. Both can operate across the front line and would bring a blend of goals and link-up play.

Personally, I would love to see Liverpool move for Alvarez. He’s got that streetwise movement, quick feet and a nose for goal – the type of player who makes others better around him. Joao Pedro, on the other hand, is a bit more unpredictable but has that flair and energy Arne Slot could mould into something special.
We also need to talk about the defence. Joe Gomez’s future remains uncertain, and Jarell Quansah, while promising, still could be heading for the exit door. That leaves a gap – and I fully expect Liverpool to address it before the window shuts.
We need another centre-back, preferably someone who is comfortable on the ball and positionally astute. If the recruitment team can pull off something in that area with the same precision they’ve shown so far, then this really will be a transformational summer.
This is Liverpool making noise in a different way. The data is back at the heart of recruitment and the scouting feels aligned. And crucially, the manager – Arne Slot – has a clear idea of what he wants.
What’s also obvious is that these signings are designed for more than just the Premier League. Liverpool want to dominate Europe again. To do that, you need players like Wirtz, Kerkez, and Frimpong who can adapt to multiple systems, styles and intensities.
We’re not just buying names. We’re buying futures.
This is Liverpool stepping into a new era. The title defence begins now – and the rest of the league should be very, very worried.
