We might not see a better 0-0 in the 2022/23 season than the one between Everton and Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.
The two Merseyside rivals went toe-to-toe at Goodison Park and it was an absolute thriller from start to finish.
Both teams had numerous chances to bag all three points, with goalkeepers Jordan Pickford and Alisson Becker the standout performers on the day.
Everton actually had a goal disallowed late in the second half, VAR eventually deciding that Conor Coady was offside when he converted from close-range against his boyhood club.
It was mighty close, but in the end the correct decision was made by those at Stockley Park.
Liverpool hit the woodwork on three separate occasions at Goodison, summer signing Darwin Nunez responsible for one of them in the opening 45 minutes of play.
The Uruguayan striker came agonisingly close to emulating Fernando Torres’ legendary strike against Blackburn Rovers, but Pickford tipped his tremendous half-volleyed effort onto the crossbar.
That was Nunez’s best moment on his return to Liverpool’s starting XI after picking up a red card in the 1-1 draw at home to Crystal Palace.
Other than that, the former Benfica man was a bit lacklustre up top and he’s gone viral for some failed acrobatics during the first half.
Nunez was picked out in the penalty area by a crossfield pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold and oddly attempted some kind of bicycle kick from a very tight angle.
Needless to say, it didn’t go to plan…
Well, you at least get an A* for effort, Darwin.
Nunez will take time to fully adjust to the pace of the Premier League, but there are already signs that he’ll eventually be a huge success at Liverpool.
The 22-year-old was getting into the right areas during his time on the pitch at Goodison, but was just unable to be clinical in the final third.
Nunez will hope to rediscover his scoring touch when Liverpool travel to play Napoli in the group stage of the Champions League next Wednesday evening.
Mohamed Salah will also be eager to have an impact in that game after another sub-par display (by his lofty standards) against Everton…
