With the football on hold at the moment, we’ve been thinking about who gets in Liverpool’s all-time XI.
Yesterday we completed our back four. Today we’re choosing the first of three midfielders.
Here are the nominees …
Mascherano arrived in unusual circumstances in February 2007 when Liverpool paid £18.6 million to a third-party company for his services.
The Argentinian made over 100 appearances in a four-year stint at Anfield but in that time made himself a fans’ favourite with his work-rate and ability to rush around the pitch to win the ball back.
Sadly, Mascherano never won a trophy in his time at Anfield which is a surprise to many. But the defensive midfielder went on to win every trophy under the sun while at Barcelona.
It’s unbelievable when you consider that Alan Pardew opted to play him on the left-wing for West Ham to accommodate Hayden Mullins.
A tough-tackling midfielder with a ferocious shot is a common theme among the Liverpool midfielders in contention for our best XI ever list.
Jimmy Case displayed these techniques in abundance in his 239 appearances for the Reds between 1973 and 1981.
Case dominated every Liverpool midfield he was in and was the rock that helped spur on Liverpool’s dominance of the game in the 70’s and 80’s.
Four league titles and three European Cups were won by Case before his move to Brighton and Hove Albion.
Speaking of tough-tackling midfielders with a ferocious shot.
Although Graeme Souness was much more than that.
Liverpool fans have sour memories of Souness partly down to his disastrous spell as manager in the early 90s which curtailed the club’s dominance and left one of the country’s most successful teams in limbo.
However, before that ill-fated spell Souness was one of the best footballers to grace the fields of L4.
If it wasn’t for the Scot, it’s possible Liverpool wouldn’t have achieved the success they did in the first place.
Souness had the box-to-box engine of Roy Keane and the passing range of Xabi Alonso. He was the complete midfielder.
His trophy cabinet holds five league titles and three European Cups.
A dominant midfielder for the dominant force of English football.
Here’s how the team is looking so far …
GK: Ray Clemence RB: Phil Neal LB: Andy Robertson CB: Alan Hansen CB: Virgil van Dijk CDM: Graeme Souness
Check back tomorrow when we will be choosing the second midfielder!
