Liverpool weighing up January action as defensive crisis mounts | OneFootball

Liverpool could well turn to the January transfer window to try and alleviate some of the pressure on their defensive injury problems, with several first-team players out of action at the moment.

The Reds take on Leicester City this weekend in the Premier League and will be missing, at least, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil Van Dijk from the backline, three of what you could argue is the regular four.

Indeed, Gomez and Van Dijk are out for the foreseeable future and, though Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips have stepped in this season, as has Fabinho, it sounds like Jurgen Klopp will at least consider January action now given the situation.

Quoted by the Mirror, he said:

“We will see. I don’t know what we can do in January.

“That we look for solutions in the transfer market – that is clear. But in the moment we have the situation we have.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Obviously, the Reds have seen before that Klopp doesn’t often do much business in the January window but the club has got a set of circumstances thrust on it that it has perhaps not seen before under his tenure at least.

Having two of your three orthodox, senior centre-halves out for the majority of the remainder of the season, at least, calls for potentially different action and Klopp and the club, if they find the right signing, could well dip into the window and bolster their options.
