Premier League leaders Liverpool can go 13 points clear at the top of the table by beating West Ham this afternoon.

It has been a monumental week for the Merseyside club after modern-day legend Mohamed Salah signed a new contract. More good news could be imminent, with captain Virgil van Dijk also expected to extend his stay at Anfield.

In terms of injury news, Alisson is poised to return in between the sticks. The Brazilian stopper has been forced to watch the last two games from the stands. A concussion sustained on international duty required him to follow the necessary protocols. Conor Bradley is ready to make his first start in two months having made a substitute appearance last weekend.

West Ham will be attempting to arrest a slide in form that has seen them go winless in their last four outings.

Graham Potter has only two primary absences with Crysencio Summerville and Michail Antonio side-lined. Niclas Fullkrug will be assessed to determine his availability with his fitness being closely monitored.

Form

Liverpool: WLLWL

Liverpool have faltered in recent weeks with three defeats in four games across all competitions. However, last weekend’s setback at Fulham was only their second league loss of the campaign.

After Alexis Mac Allister’s stunner put them in front against Fulham, a 14-minute blitz stunned the Reds. Ryan Sessegnon, Rodrigo Muniz and former Everton player Alex Iwobi all breached Caoimhin Kelleher’s net in quick succession at Craven Cottage. Luis Diaz found a consolation in the second period, but the damage had already been dealt.

Fortunately for Arne Slot’s side, closest challengers Arsenal have now dropped points in consecutive matches.

West Ham: WLDLD

West Ham have had an underwhelming campaign and could finish as low as 17th position this season.

Last weekend, the Hammers displayed character to draw 2-2 with Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth. It was a spirited response to their prior defeat to fellow strugglers Wolves.

Graham Potter’s arrival at the start of the calendar year is yet to have the desired effect. The former Brighton manager has a 25% win rate as West Ham boss with only three victories thus far.

Last Meeting: West Ham 0-5 Liverpool, Premier League, 29th December 2024

Liverpool ran riot in the capital in their final game of 2024 as they put five past a despondent West Ham.

The hosts held firm for the first half an hour and should have taken the lead against the run of play. Jarrod Bowen picked out Lucas Paqueta but the Brazilian slipped as he took aim and the ball flew way wide of the mark.

Alphonse Areola produced a magnificent stop from point-blank range to thwart Mohamed Salah but he could do nothing about Luis Diaz’s opener. Initially, the Colombian tried to assist Curtis Jones, only for Max Kilman to intercept. The loose ball fell back to Diaz who drilled a first-time finish into the bottom corner. Mohamed Kudus almost replied with a venomous drive of his own but the ball cannoned off the post.

Before half-time, Liverpool had put the game beyond doubt by racing into a three-goal lead. Cody Gakpo rolled into an empty net following Salah’s ingenious nutmeg on Konstantinos Mavropanos. Four minutes later, Salah got in on the act himself with a cleverly disguised shot that fooled Areola.

The rout continued after the restart with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s shot from range taking a decisive deflection off Kilman. In the closing stages, Arne Slot’s men broke with pace and substitute Diogo Jota finalised the flowing move with a sweeping finish.

That merciless result was Julen Lopetegui’s penultimate match as West Ham manager. The Spaniard was later relieved of his duties following a heavy defeat to Manchester City.
