A battle of Britain highlights Tuesday’s Champions League action as out-of-sorts Liverpool and last season’s Europa League runners-up Rangers lock horns at Anfield.

Both sides found themselves on the losing side in last season’s major European finals.

While Real Madrid edged the Reds 1-0 in the Champions League showpiece, Eintracht Frankfurt ousted the Gers on penalties in Europe’s second-tier title decider.

Yet unlike last season, Jurgen Klopp’s men look miles away from reaching the most prestigious final in European football following a thoroughly underwhelming 2022/23 start.

Liverpool trailed Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 over the weekend but fought back to turn the tables, only to draw 3-3 at full-time in a match that saw them concede 3+ goals for only the time in 43 games at Anfield.

Led by Virgil van Dijk, the Reds’ backline that once looked impenetrable has failed to keep a clean sheet 11 times in 13 matches, including both Group A fixtures this term.

But after a dreadful 4-1 defeat at Napoli on day one, the Merseyside powerhouse eked out a 2-1 home win over Ajax last time out to bolster their bid to advance to the knock-outs.

On the other hand, Rangers’ first foray into the Champions League group stages since 2010/11 has been off to a woeful start as they’ve lost both Group A outings by an aggregate score of 7-0.

Manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst faces an uncertain future in Glasgow, with another potential disappointment at Anfield threatening to spell the end of his mixed stint at Ibrox Stadium.

Match Preview

Liverpool

Unbeaten in all five competitive home encounters this season (W3, D2), Liverpool will be out to post a 14th win in 16 Champions League group stage games at Anfield (W13, D1, L1).

High scoring has been a common theme in the Reds’ 13 previous home victories in the competition’s group phase, with Klopp’s team netting 36 goals at an average of 2.76 per match.

If the Merseyside faithful are looking for an omen, the last time Liverpool faced and defeated Scottish adversaries in the European Cup, they went on to win the competition, doing so in the 1980/91 season.

Rangers

Since an unfathomable showing against Napoli at Ibrox, Rangers have won back-to-back league matches after scoring first in both and may feel there’s no better time to take on Liverpool.

However, the Gers have found their European visits to England hard to win, picking up just one triumph in their seven such fixtures (D2, L4), which cannot inspire their hopes of staging an upset at Anfield.

There’s a piece of unwanted history looming over Rangers’ heads as they risk drawing a blank in their first three Champions League group matches for the first time in the club’s history.

Liverpool vs Rangers Prediction

Despite Liverpool’s poor start to the season, we expect them to overcome their early struggle and show what they are made of when it matters the most.

So we back them to pour more misery on Rangers’ sorrow Champions League campaign and solidify their position in Group A.
