Liverpool welcome Paris Saint-Germain to Anfield for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie tonight.
The Reds rode their luck in the first leg to claim a crucial 1-0 win in Paris. Despite being dominated for the entirety of the contest, an 87th-minute goal from substitute Harvey Elliott secured the Premier League leaders an advantage. Alisson Becker was inspired in goal, with his nine saves a joint-record in a Champions League knockout stage game.
Arne Slot’s side extended their lead at the top of the Premier League at the weekend, by beating Southampton. However, the Dutchman was unhappy with the energy of his players and has demanded improvement ahead of PSG’s visit.
The French champions warmed up for the second leg with a 4-1 thrashing of Rennes in Ligue 1. Ousmane Dembele was on target twice to continue his stunning season. The Frenchman has the joint-most non-penalty goals in Europe’s top five leagues this season (19).
Arne Slot resisted the temptation for wholesale changes at the weekend with just three players rotated against Southampton. Andy Robertson, Alexis Mac Allister and Diogo Jota dropped to the bench from the team that started the first leg against PSG and could return tonight.
Slot also withdrew Dominik Szoboszlai at half-time and called starting the Hungarian a ‘mistake’.
“Every time I am sitting here and talking about Dominik, I’m talking about he is a machine. He can keep on going, running and running and running,” Slot said.
“It was maybe the first time this season I saw a different energy from him. Which is maybe normal. Maybe I made a mistake by playing him because he gives so much every single game.”
Cody Gakpo again missed out at the weekend and the Dutchman remains a doubt. Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley are confirmed absentees, alongside academy product Tyler Morton.
Liverpool predicted XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Salah, Diaz, Nunez.
