Liverpool welcome arch-rivals Manchester United to Anfield in the club’s first Premier League fixture of the year.

Arne Slot’s side head into the new year as Premier League leaders and can extend their advantage on Sunday. Arsenal’s failure to beat Brighton means Liverpool will move eight points clear with a win, while still possessing a game in hand on the Gunners.

Liverpool have lost just once in all competitions this season following a brilliant start to Slot’s reign at the club. The Dutchman secured a statement win at Manchester United early in his tenure and will be hoping for a repeat of September’s 3-0 success at Old Trafford.

Manchester United arrive at Anfield in contrasting mood. Ruben Amorim’s team are aiming to avoid losing four consecutive league games for the first time since 1961. United’s recent record at Anfield is also poor with no win at Liverpool since 2016. Form favours the home side.

Dominik Szoboszlai returns from his one-game suspension after picking up a caution off the bench against Leicester on Boxing Day. Having begun that game as a substitute, the Hungarian’s ban has provided him with much needed rest during the hectic festive period.

Liverpool are light in central defence after Joe Gomez picked up a hamstring injury at West Ham. Slot has confirmed the defender is facing several weeks on the sidelines. Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley did return to training this week to boost the depleted defensive stocks but it is unclear whether either will feature this weekend.

Slot also said Trent Alexander-Arnold will play despite the ongoing speculation surrounding his future. Real Madrid have seen a bid for the right-back, who is out of contract in the summer, rejected.
