Manchester United’s goalless draw against Liverpool at Anfield attracted record viewing figures for an event shown exclusively on Sky Sports.

The stalemate ensured United remained top of the Premier League with a two point advantage over Manchester City and Leicester and a three point gap to Liverpool.

Liverpool vs Manchester United is one of football’s oldest rivals and the game didn’t require much added hype with both sides title contenders at this stage.

And despite an encounter void of true drama, Sky saw an average 4.5m viewers for the fixture, surpassing the 4.095m who witnessed Man City beat Sir Alex Ferguson’s Reds on their way to the title in April 2012.

The draw was Sky’s second highest viewed Premier League game ever behind the Merseyside derby after Project Restart in June, which was also shown on free-to-air Pick TV and Sky One.

Remarkably, it was second only behind Game of Thrones as the most viewed programme ever on Sky’s paid channels.

United return to action at Craven Cottage away to Fulham on Wednesday evening where they will be hoping to build momentum after a hard-earned draw.
