The changeable weather conditions on Merseyside have put Liverpool's blockbuster Premier League fixture with Manchester United on Sunday afternoon at risk of postponement.

Liverpool had been scheduled to host their fierce rivals at 4.30pm GMT, but a burst of treacherous winter conditions has called into question the safety of staging the match at Anfield.

Airports in Liverpool and Manchester closed their runaways due to heavy snow on Sunday morning. The Met Office delivered an amber weather warning for snow, ice and freezing rain across the Merseyside area which will remain in place until the end of the weekend.

According to The Times, the Ground Safety Advisory Group of Liverpool City Council are scheduled to meet at 12pm to discuss whether the huge top-flight clash will be allowed to be played as planned. The organising body had already met at 9am, but were forced to delay their final decision.

As a white blanket of snow covered the roads leading to Anfield, Liverpool made an official statement. "At this stage the match is planned to go ahead as normal and every effort is being made to get the game on," the club declared. "A further safety meeting will take place again at midday to assess the latest conditions."

Liverpool already had the first Merseyside derby of the season postponed due to adverse weather conditions and are yet to find room in the congested calendar to play that Goodison Park fixture. As the Reds remain in four different competitions, nailing down a free week to go up against United in the event of postponement will also prove difficult.
