What better way to set off a new Premier League season than a blockbuster Community Shield showdown between Liverpool and Manchester City?
Last season’s final day climax saw Man City come from a 2-0 down to beat Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa 3-2 and cancel out Liverpool’s unprecedented quadruple bid in heartbreaking fashion.
A single-point margin made a world of difference as Pep Guardiola’s side sealed their fourth Premier League title in five years at the expense of the Reds’ historical pursuit.
Though lifting the Community Shield trophy won’t calm the nerves of Jurgen Klopp, the charismatic Liverpool boss will be out to get his revenge.
Due to the ongoing Women’s Euro 2022, Wembley Stadium will not be available for usage for the first time since 2012.
An emergency has given Leicester City’s King Power Stadium a unique opportunity to host the annual event that will take place on Saturday, July 30.
Liverpool
Last season’s Premier League runners-up have had to contend with the loss of long-serving stalwart Sadio Mane, who ended his six-year stint at Anfield to join Bayern Munich.
Not ones to simply sit and hope, Liverpool took out their checkbook to splash out a stratospheric £85m on the acquisition of prodigious forward Darwin Nunez from Benfica.
The Uruguayan’s stellar second-half display during a 5-0 thumping of RB Leipzig in a pre-season friendly featuring a quadruple of goals gave the Anfield faithful an insight into his capabilities.
Nunez should lead the line at the King Power as the Reds seek their first Community Shield triumph since 2006, having since lost back-to-back finals, including the one to Man City in 2019.
Manchester City
Speaking of high-profile signings, Man City sent £51.2m Borussia Dortmund’s way to capture the signature of the world’s greatest talent Erling Haaland.
Only 12 minutes into his debut, the Norwegian starlet did his thing, latching onto Jack Grealish’s low cross to sink familiar foes Bayern Munich in a mouth-watering pre-season friendly in the United States.
In addition to Haaland, the Cityzens have acquired the services of Kalvin Phillips and Julian Alvarez, adding more attacking potential to a side that tallied 150 competitive goals last season.
Unlike Liverpool, who are on a 16-year wait for Community Shield success, Man City’s most recent triumph in this annual competition dates back to 2019.
Do you want it to be any different?
Every Premier League fan is already aware of what Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne are capable of doing on the big stage.
The world belongs to the young, and Saturday’s encounter at the King Power could lay down the marker for a new long-standing Premier League rivalry.
Nunez and Haaland will go head-to-head for the first time in what may well label the beginning of a new era in the English top flight.
While the Uruguayan striker topped the scoring charts in the Primeira Liga last season with 26 goals under his belt, the Norwegian finished third in the Bundesliga with 22.
Both players have already got off the mark with their new sides, and the upcoming Community Shield will be an opportunity to unveil themselves to the Premier League crowd.
