Fan footage has captured the moment Liverpool’s talismanic centre-back Virgil van Dijk annoyed Manchester City’s players during Saturday’s Community Shield.
Liverpool won the first trophy of the 2022-23 campaign thanks to a 3-1 victory over Pep Guardiola’s side at the King Power Stadium.
Trent Alexander-Arnold opened the scoring in the 21st minute, while City substitute Julian Alvarez equalised midway through the second half.
However, late goals from Mohamed Salah and record signing Darwin Nunez sealed victory for Jurgen Klopp and his players.
Fan-captured footage of Salah’s penalty has been uploaded to social media and it shows Van Dijk channelling his inner Peter Kay by giving the ball a full-on ‘Ave it!’.
Erling Haaland, who endured a bit of a nightmare against the Reds on his competitive debut for City, was seen calling for the ball as Liverpool’s players ran off celebrating.
The Norwegian striker wanted to resume play as quickly as possible, as did the rest of his teammates.
But Van Dijk arced his run and leathered the ball into Row Z in an attempt to try and waste some precious seconds.
Even though City wouldn’t have been able to kick-off before Liverpool’s players had returned to their own half, Van Dijk’s antics still angered them.
A couple of players complained to referee Craig Pawson, while Rodri was seen attempting to square up to the Dutchman, who casually jogs on by.
Van Dijk and his Liverpool teammates will now begin their preparations for their opening fixture of the new Premier League season.
The Reds travel to newly-promoted Fulham on Saturday lunchtime, aiming to begin the new campaign with a convincing victory.
Klopp’s side then face Crystal Palace at Anfield in their second fixture before a crunch clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford on August 22.
