La Gazzetta dello Sport notes that Liverpool ‘underestimated’ Atalanta in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals, making La Dea the third club to win twice at Anfield in European competitions after Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Atalanta stunned Liverpool on Thursday night, securing a legendary 3-0 win at Anfield in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals.

As highlighted by Friday’s printed edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper on page 10, La Dea became the first Serie A club to win at Anfield twice, a feat only Real Madrid and Barcelona accomplished before last night’s game.

Atalanta already beat Liverpool away in the 2020-21 Champions League group stage, but the Reds had already secured qualification for the knock-out phase and the match was played behind closed doors due to the COVID pandemic.

Gazzetta’s reporter at Anfield, Sebastiano Vernazza, wrote that Liverpool ‘underestimated’ La Dea and ‘didn’t expect’ such a performance from Gian Piero Gasperini’s men last night.

The Reds’ attitude was evident in Scamacca’s second goal, which the Italian scored with Charles De Ketelaere’s assistance. Scamacca was left alone inside the box, exposing Liverpool’s ‘stunned’ defensive line.
