Liverpool’s recruitment strategy is starting to be questioned at Anfield after a tough start to the 2022-23 campaign, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Reds picked up a much-needed win in the Champions League on Tuesday night, beating Ajax 2-1 on Merseyside, and Jurgen Klopp will hope it is the start of a winning run.

How have Liverpool performed this season?

After pushing Manchester City all the way in the Premier League last term, winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, as well as reaching the Champions League final, much was expected of Liverpool this season.

But with six matches played in the top flight, they sit in seventh place having won just two games.

Klopp’s side have been held to draws by Fulham and Crystal Palace in the Premier League while Napoli comfortably dispatched them 4-1 in the Champions League as well.

It was another relatively quiet summer of business at Anfield too. Despite losing the likes of Sadio Mane, Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino, only four new faces signed in the form of Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho, Calvin Ramsay and Arthur Melo.

The latter only arrived on loan after Klopp was left with injuries to the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Diogo Jota earlier this season.

What has Jones said on the situation?

Jones believes that Liverpool’s transfer strategy may finally come under the microscope following their poor start to the season.

The journalist says that the Reds are at a crucial crossroads with their recruitment undergoing its first serious test in some time.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I think we’re at a crossroads with this Liverpool team at the moment and it’s going to be a test of their recruitment strategy because, for the first time in quite a while, it’s coming into the spotlight and people are starting to analyse it slightly differently to how they were before.”

What impact have the new recruits made?

Nunez signed on a club-record deal worth £85 million this summer but the former Benfica star has endured a tough start to life on Merseyside, getting himself sent off for a headbutt against Crystal Palace and scoring just twice in six appearances so far.

Carvalho has shown he has the talent and ability to become a future superstar for the Reds, scoring a crucial late winner against Newcastle, despite only starting one match so far.

Melo, meanwhile, has made just one 13-minute cameo for the club, coming off the bench in the thrashing at the hands of Napoli.
