A return to the Champions League is a minimum requirement for next season and that will take a fair bit of investment, with Khephren Thuram and Micky van de Ven also eyed after the arrival of new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke.

Alexis Mac Allister

Liverpool are set to pay around £15million less than previously thought for Mac Allister. Football Insider say a fee of £55m to £60m is being discussed, rather than the £70m previously reported.

Multiple reports suggest personal terms are agreed with Fabrizio Romano stating that the deal with Brighton should be completed next week.

Mac Allister has also been speaking out on his future with Miami-based Argentine news outlet Infobae. He said: “I am very calm because I also have the possibility of being in a club like Brighton that accompanied me at all times and in which I really enjoy being.

“If I do not have to leave the club I will continue to be very happy there, but I am aware that there are possibilities [to move] and, if a good offer arrives for the club and for me, we will evaluate it.

“I have no doubts that [the Premier League] is the best league to play in and that is why I am aware that I would like my next club to be in the Premier League. I really enjoy being there.”

Khephren Thuram

Reports emerged earlier in the week that Liverpool are in talks with Nice over a £52m deal for young French midfielder Thuram.

According to iNews, Newcastle are also in the race as they eye a new midfielder. James Maddison and Amadou Onana are others reportedly on the Toon’s radar.

Thuram has also spoken out on his future, telling a UNFP award ceremony: “I want to progress, go on the field, have fun. For now, I'm in Nice. It's going very well. I really like the club, so I still see myself in Nice. I am very well in Nice.

“There are noises, I hear, but I'm happy in Nice. I hope to grow with this club. I would like [coach Didier Digard] to stay because he brought a lot to this group when it was in a difficult period.

“I don't know if I tell him enough but he's someone I can never thank enough. He helped me a lot in difficult times in my young career. We worked a lot together. I wish him only happiness, in Nice, or elsewhere.”

Micky van de Ven

Schmadtke could get straight down to business at Liverpool with a move for a former player of his at Wolfsburg.

Local German outlet WAZ name defender Van de Ven as a target for the sporting director, who wants to exploit the German market in the transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp is also said to be keen on the towering centre-back, who would cost more than £35m.
