Liverpool to lodge ‘improved bid’ for Jamal Lewis as Norwich reject £10m opening offer | OneFootball

Liverpool are set to lodge an ‘improved’ bid for Jamal Lewis after seeing an opening offer of £10m rejected for the Norwich City full-back.

The Premier League champions are seeking specialist competition and cover for Andy Robertson during the summer transfer window and view Lewis as an ideal addition to their title-winning squad, the 22-year-old having impressed during his debut season at the top level despite the Canaries relegation.

Jurgen Klopp’s squad has lacked depth at left-back despite the almost ever-present status of Robertson, with veteran midfielder James Milner having often been deployed in an unfamiliar full-back role during the absence of the Scotland captain.

Liverpool signed Robertson from relegated Hull City three years ago and believe Lewis can enjoy a similar path of development, the youngster already a full international with Northern Ireland and possessing the attacking instincts to thrive in the Reds’ side.

Despite their drop into the Championship, Liverpool’s opening bid of £10m was immediately rejected, though the Guardian are reporting that Klopp’s side will return with an improved offer as they look to make their first signing of the summer, Norwich said to value Lewis at ‘closer to £20m’.

Lewis is understood to be ‘keen’ on the move and is initially prepared to play a back-up role to Robertson, with the hope he can progress significantly to provide real competition for a first-team place.

The Reds’ opening offer included a substantial sell-on clause and it remains to be seen how high the club will go with alternative targets also being considered, whilst there have also been reports that teenage full-back Yasser Larouci – who has just a year remaining on his deal and is keen to leave for first-team football – could be included as a potential makeweight.
