Liverpool want to keep shot-stopper Caoimhin Kelleher amidst Tottenham Hotspur interest

Premier League rivals Liverpool want to keep a hold of shot-stopper Caoimhin Kelleher amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur, according to The Athletic (Subscription Required).

The Ireland international is keen on parting ways with the Reds ahead of next summer. As things stand, he ‘would jump at the opportunity’ of becoming the number one.

However, the Anfield side realise the 24-year-old’s talent and potential and have no intention of parting ways with him for now. Last summer, the Merseyside outfit rejected enquiries that were made for the goalkeeper.

Kelleher is tied down to Liverpool until June 2026. Jurgen Klopp has previously stated that it would take “an “extraordinary” offer to consider the Irish national’s departure. Apart from Spurs, Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, as well as other teams around Europe, have him on their radar.

The 24-year-old made his way through the youth ranks at the Anfield side. In the 2020/21 campaign, the shot-stopper made a place for himself in the Merseyside outfit’s senior squad.

However, over the years, Kelleher has played second-fiddle to Alisson Becker. The Brazil international is one of the best goalkeepers in the world at the moment and it will be difficult for the Ireland international to pip him in the pecking order.

As for Tottenham, Hugo Lloris is coming into the final years of his playing career. At 36, it is understandable that the French national has not been performing at an optimal level this season.

Unfortunately, we have Fraser Forster as our number two. The former Southampton star joined the Lilywhites last summer. The 35-year-old is not getting any younger, either.

Therefore, we evidently need to plan for the near future and get a new first-choice goalkeeper. But while Kelleher has done well in the limited opportunities he has been provided at Liverpool, the Irish international is not experienced enough. Thus, will the North London side pursue his services next summer? Only time will tell.
