In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, transfer insider Dean Jones tipped Liverpool to move in for Sporting CP talent Matheus Nunes. Jones said,

“There’s definitely been some feeling around Portugal that Liverpool might make an offer.

“Liverpool have had scouting reports on this guy and Manchester United have actually been linked too, but neither of those have pushed forward at the moment.”

Nunes’ Rich Vein Of Form At Estádio José Alvalade Last Season

Nunes had a brilliant campaign in Portuguese football recently as he was responsible for performing at a high level for Sporting at the centre of the park. The Portuguese midfield ace made 50 appearances for his current employers last season, finding the back of the net four times and picking up five assists in multiple competitions.

The 23-year-old managed to be a positive influence in both halves after he averaged 1.3 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 0.6 shots, 0.7 key passes and 2.5 dribbles per game in Liga Portugal. He was even excellent when distributing the ball from midfield as he completed 85.8% of his attempted passes in the Portuguese top-flight (stats via whoscored).

What Will Nunes Bring To Liverpool?

Nunes loves a tackle and usually times his challenges well to earn the ball back for his side at the centre of the park. He can strike the ball well from long range and has got the eye to play a killer pass in the attacking end of the field.

Nunes is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also serve as a holding midfielder or function in the number ten position as an attacking midfielder if required. Plus, the Portuguese sensation can even complete some dangerous dribbles in the opponent’s half.

We can expect Nunes to bring more energy and dynamism to Jurgen Klopp’s midfield if Liverpool decide to snap him up during this summer transfer period.

At 23, the future is quite bright for the Sporting CP star as long as he continues to take strides towards improving himself in the coming seasons. He has what it takes to enhance the quality of Klopp’s midfield department and increase competition for places within his squad.

The Liverpool head coach could be the ideal man to oversee his development at the Merseyside club over the next few years. Hence, it makes sense for the Reds to listen to Dean Jones’ advice by moving in for the Brazil-born playmaker before the end of this transfer window.
