Liverpool transfer target Marcel Sabitzer is reportedly high up on Jose Mourinho’s wishlist of Tottenham transfer targets for the summer window.

According to The Express, Mourinho has personally picked out Sabitzer as a player he would like to bring to the Premier League from RB Leipzig ahead of next season.

This comes after Bild claimed Liverpool are looking at Sabitzer as a potential target as Gini Wijnaldum’s contract continues to wind down.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Sabitzer did not give the best account of himself when he played against Liverpool in the Champions League earlier this year. He recorded WhoScored ratings of 5.53 and 6.65 against Jurgen Klopp’s team as he was dribbled past four times and culpable of four unforced turnovers in possession. This suggests that he struggled to cope with the pace and energy of Liverpool’s midfield, which may have offered an insight into how he could perform at Premier League level.

So, if the Austrian international is high up on Tottenham’s wishlist then Liverpool could be better off allowing them to compete for his signature. Instead of taking a gamble on a player who was unable to perform against the midfielders they currently have, Liverpool could allow Tottenham to sign him and then pursue other options who may be more suited to their style of play.

For example, Liverpool have been linked with a move for AZ Alkmaar’s Teun Koopmeiners, who is reportedly available for around €20m. Liverpool’s interest in the Dutch midfielder could show that they have moved on from their pursuit of Sabitzer, or at least that the RB Leipzig man is just one of a number of players they are considering.
