Liverpool transfer target Sander Berge is reportedly expecting to leave Sheffield United following their relegation from the Premier League.

According to Sky Sports, Berge believes his future lies away from Bramall Lane as his release clause has dropped to £35m due to their bottom three finish this season, with Everton and Arsenal among the clubs keen on signing him.

The Reds were linked with a move for Berge earlier this year as they look to replace outgoing Gini Wijnaldum this summer.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Given some of the other midfielders Liverpool have been linked to in recent weeks/months, the club could be better off allowing Everton and Arsenal to battle it out for Berge. Liverpool have suffered enough with injuries this season and Berge has been restricted to 13 starts in the Premier League due to injury, suggesting that he may not be a reliable option in midfield for Jurgen Klopp in terms of availability.

Rodrigo de Paul, meanwhile, has started 33 or more Serie A games in each of the last three seasons for Udinese, amid reported interest from Liverpool. This shows that de Paul rarely gets injured or misses games due to suspension, which means that he could be a player Klopp is able to trust throughout the season as he knows that he is likely to be available when needed.

The Argentine, de Paul, also stands out above Berge on the pitch. De Paul has averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.48 in the Serie A this season, whilst Berge has scored 6.43 for his performances in a struggling Blades side. Therefore, de Paul could be a better signing for Liverpool than Berge and the club may not lose any sleep over Arsenal or Everton signing the Norweigan, who is expecting to find a new team.
